It’s a testament to the versatility of the tablet market to see how many new tablet stands there are out there. Walk into any store and you’ll find no shortage of props, cradles, and grippers to keep your tabled erect and upright. Apple’s official iPad case even ships with a built-in stand feature, letting you fold it back on itself to give the device some height and tilt when you want to go hands-free with it.
So why would you pay $40 for a ChillTab2? Should you pay $40 for a ChillTab2?
I’ll answer the second question first and the first question second: yes, and here’s why.
The ChillTab2 is an industrial grade stand made by ChillBed Industries. It’s a small operation that hand-crafts each piece from their home base in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The stand itself is quite simple: a piece of powder coated anodized aluminum, shaped to hold your tablet at a gentle incline. Two aluminum brackets are topped with a soft foam rubber material to cradle the bottom of the device without scratching it. A hole is situated just under the brackets, between them, to cleanly accommodate a charging/sync cable. Both ends of the stand are capped with a plastic bumper. In short: it’s a classy piece of hardware that your tablet will look good on.
Whether you’ve got an iPad, or a Galaxy tab, or you’re thinking of picking up a BlackBerry Playbook or the Motorola Xoom, the ChillTab2 is perfect size for it. The angle that your device will rest at makes it comfortable to read when it’s sitting on a desk, and its small footprint means you can place the stand within arms reach without having to worry about cluttering your workspace. The buffed aluminum brackets stand out nicely against the black frame, making it an appealing addition to your desk even without a tablet on it.
Do we like the ChillTab2? Yes, we do. While it commands a premium at $45, it’s a hand-made product, built in Canada with an elegant design and premium components. It may be cliché to call it the Cadillac of tablet stands, but it’s apropos. It’s fashionable, it’s functional, and it fit our needs perfectly; that’s about as high of an endorsement as we can give for any product.
